Science

Choose a subject

At David Livingstone Academy, we strongly believe that science is more than just a subject; it is a mode of thinking and a tool for exploring the universe. It empowers children to ask appropriate, thought-provoking questions, make well-informed decisions, and actively engage within the world around them. Our science curriculum is dedicated to fostering inquisitive minds; encouraging critical thinking; and inspiring our pupils to shape their understanding through scientific exploration and discovery.

Our science curriculum is guided by three core principles: substantive knowledge, disciplinary knowledge, and relevance.

  1. Substantive Knowledge:

Substantive knowledge in our curriculum encompasses the scientific principles and conceptual understanding defined by the national curriculum, covering biology, chemistry, and physics. Through a comprehensive study of these subjects, we strive to provide our students with a well-rounded foundation of scientific knowledge.

  1. Disciplinary Knowledge:

Our curriculum specifies the importance of the development of disciplinary knowledge. This is accomplished by engaging students in the practices of "working scientifically" and conducting "scientific enquiry." We emphasise the role of posing appropriate questions, formulating hypotheses, and conducting investigations that allow students to collect, analyse, and draw meaningful conclusions from data.

  1. Relevance:

We understand the significance of making science relevant to the lives of our pupils and the world they live in. Our curriculum is carefully designed to reveal the real-world applications of scientific concepts, enabling students to connect what they learn in the classroom directly to the challenges and opportunities they encounter in their daily lives.
