At David Livingstone Academy, we believe that the study of art and design is essential to supporting them to develop an understanding and appreciation of human creativity, imagination and thought. As they progress through primary school, we want children to observe the world around them with a deepening appreciation and ability to interpret what they see. We want our children to be able to effectively communicate what they feel, think and believe and to understand the ways artists have done this throughout human history.
Children will study an artist’s work or the works of an artistic movement in detail as strong examples of a particular artistic skill. Following their study of an artist’s work and the movement to which it belongs, pupils have the chance to practice and imitate techniques and skills studied. Once they have developed their confidence in these skills, they are supported to innovate their own works applying their new knowledge and skills.
Evaluation is an important part of the process supporting children to reflect on the effectiveness and success of their work as well as supporting them to learn how we critically engage and appreciate with art works. We ensure that children can access the learning where they have strength, even if there is an additional need. For pupils with fine motor difficulties, we provide them with a range of tools and resources to support them to access the subject, for example, a range of pencil widths and grips.
