At David Livingstone Academy, our writing curriculum develops the teaching of writing skills from word to sentence level, through to the development of impactful pieces of writing that effectively communicate meaning to an audience.
Our canon of high-quality culturally, historically and contextually diverse texts acts as a stimulus for writing. Teaching is based on a three-phase approach whereby teacher-written models are studied then used as building blocks for independent writing. We believe that in order for our children to leave our academy as successful writers, they need to have an understanding of writing for a range of purposes, and so we give them ample opportunity to write texts to entertain, inform, persuade and discuss.
Teachers plan writing lessons so that the skills for specific types of writing are introduced in clear, logical and manageable steps. Clear and consistent structures are used for planning writing, and pupils have frequent opportunities to share, edit and improve their work.
