At David Livingstone Academy, we believe mathematical learning should be a dynamic and interconnected journey rather than a linear progression. Our Mathematics curriculum draws inspiration from a comprehensive network of mathematical concepts, incorporating insights from the Complete Maths framework, crafted by experts over the past 15 years. It continuously evolves, harnessing the power of AI and machine learning to intricately arrange these mathematical ideas for optimal student comprehension.

We take a mastery approach to the teaching of mathematics. The fundamental principle is that there are high expectations for all children to reach the same high standard of mathematical proficiency, and that they are effectively supported to do so. Lessons gradually and strategically build on prior learning to develop depth of understanding.

Teachers focus on high quality instruction, work that is carefully sequenced and developing good subject knowledge. This supports pupils to articulate their understanding of mathematical concepts. Children progress through the learning at broadly the same pace and children who grasp concepts rapidly are challenged through rich and sophisticated problems. We believe that, through this approach, our children become automatic, efficient and flexible mathematicians.

We recognise that when working mathematically, children should be supported at whichever level they are at. Therefore, we use a range of carefully selected models and resources, including concrete and pictorial representations of number or the appropriate problems.

To further support pupils in developing arithmetic fluency and consolidating key mathematical concepts, we run Maths Meetings. These regular sessions are designed to reinforce prior learning and ensure that essential knowledge from previous years is reviewed, retained, and built upon. This helps prevent learning from being forgotten and strengthens the foundation for future mathematical success.

We also provide access to online platforms, such as Complete Maths TutorNumbots, and Times Table Rockstars. These resources enable pupils to deepen their understanding and practice essential skills at home, fostering independent learning and confidence in mathematics.
