At David Livingstone Academy, we believe that mathematical learning should be a dynamic, interconnected journey—not simply a linear progression. Our approach to mathematics teaching is rooted in the principles of mastery, where every child is encouraged and supported to achieve a deep, lasting understanding of mathematical concepts.
We set high expectations for all learners and ensure that every child is given the tools they need to succeed. Our lessons are carefully sequenced to build upon prior learning, allowing pupils to develop a strong foundation and deepen their understanding over time.
High-quality teaching lies at the heart of our curriculum. Teachers use adaptive strategies, precise subject knowledge, and well-structured lessons to help pupils articulate and explore mathematical ideas with confidence. Children move through the curriculum at broadly the same pace, with those who grasp concepts quickly being challenged through rich, sophisticated problems that extend their thinking.
We are committed to meeting the needs of all learners. To support this, we use a range of carefully selected models and representations—concrete, pictorial, and abstract—to make learning accessible and meaningful. These resources help children visualise mathematical concepts and solve problems effectively, regardless of their starting point.
To further develop arithmetic fluency and reinforce key mathematical concepts, we run regular Maths Meetings. These sessions are designed to revisit and consolidate prior learning, ensuring that essential knowledge is retained, built upon, and not forgotten. This regular review strengthens pupils’ confidence and prepares them for future mathematical success.
We also provide access to a range of high-quality online platforms, including Complete Maths Tutor, Number Sense, Numbots, Number Sense and Times Tables Rock Stars. These tools offer pupils opportunities to practise essential skills, extend their learning at home, and develop greater independence and confidence in mathematics.
Through our mastery approach, strategic use of resources, and strong emphasis on fluency and reasoning, we aim to nurture confident, flexible, and efficient mathematicians who are well-equipped for the next stage of their learning journey.
